Project Description

Highfield Primary School in Burntwood, Staffordshire had been suffering with water ingress issues for several years. Persistent leaks led to ongoing reactive maintenance and disruption, creating an urgent need for a long-term roofing solution to ensure the school could continue to operate smoothly and safely.

The Challenge

The ageing flat roof presented multiple issues:

  • Damp insulation compromising thermal performance
  • Existing roof suffers from standing water
  • Building movement impacting roof integrity
  • Low-level windows contributing to water ingress
  • Degraded rooflights no longer fit for purpose

These problems not only threatened the structural fabric of the building but also failed to meet modern thermal and waterproofing standards.

SOPREMA's Solution

SOPREMA assessed the condition of the school’s flat roofs and provided a comprehensive, free-of-charge appraisal. Using core sample analysis, SOPREMA’s technical team identified key areas of failure and presented a detailed condition report. Budget costs were also provided to support the client’s asset planning and financial forecasting.

To futureproof the roof and ensure long-term performance, SOPREMA recommended a full refurbishment using the SOPRALENE 250 waterproofing system, offering a 25-year single-point warranty and tested to BROOF(t4) fire classification. Thermal performance was significantly upgraded with the installation of SOPRATHERM tapered insulation, which now meets Part L requirements and eliminate ponding water. The SOPREMA Draini outlets provided efficient rainwater drainage and ensured the waterproofing would remain in effect, should internal pipes be blocked.

All solutions were aligned with current industry standards, including Safe2Torch guidance, with bespoke design details developed to suit the building’s specific needs.

Project Delivery

The works were expertly delivered by Approved Contractor Russell Trew Roofing, with close collaboration from SOPREMA throughout the project. The SOPREMA team provided dedicated support to both the client and Russel Trew Roofing to ensure a smooth project smart and effective onboarding.

Given the school’s operational hours, particular attention was paid to minimising disruption, with material deliveries and on-site activity carefully scheduled around the school day. To further reduce impact on the learning environment, Russell Trew Roofing caried out work over weekends where necessary.

Despite the project taking place during the winter months, the team maintained a steady programme thanks to meticulous planning and site coordination.

Technical Assurance

A dedicated SOPREMA Field Technician monitored the installation process, providing on-site support and approving the work for warranty issuance. This ensured the highest standards of quality were upheld, delivering peace of mind to the client.

Outcome

The refurbishment has transformed the roof that offers long-term protection and thermal efficiency. Now, pupils and staff at Highfield Primary School can enjoy a warm and dry environment all year round.
